5 Creative Local Activities to Keep You Sane During the Pandemic

Posted on July 28, 2020 at 4:20 PM by Crystal Keener

"When it rains, play in the rain." There are ways of making the best out of any situation,
this one included. Wilkes Art Gallery has a few unique opportunities to get you out of the
house, and finally socialize (safely) with people other than your dog.

1. Pottery is a hobby for those who don’t mind getting a little messy (or who are lovers of
Ghost , like me). To get started, join Wilkes Art Gallery’s Pottery classes on
Mondays, (August 3-14) for Advance Hand Build 4-6pm, and Wheel 6:30-8:30pm .
To visit a pottery studio, it would be quite expensive to obtain all the necessary
equipment and supplies to create your first ceramic piece. WAG is offering classes
starting at $110 for members and $120 for non-members.The type of items you can
create through pottery is endless including plates, mugs, jars, and other decorative

2. Intermediate and Advanced Watercolor
Drawing and painting are one of the most versatile hobbies for adults since there are
tons of different art mediums you can learn and multiple ways you can explore them.
Don’t know how to draw a circle? No problem! WAG offers Intermediate and
Advanced Watercolor classes every Tuesday, (July 21-August 25) from
5:30-7:30pm . Classes for members are $100 and $110 for non-members You may be
no Picasso, but remember every talented artist was once a beginner.

3. Knitting
Knitting is a hobby for adults who have an interest in making things from yarn. Trust me,
it’s not a hobby just for your grandma; but I’m sure she would be delighted if you
brought her home a knitted blanket (remember to call her too)! You can join WAG’s
Knitting class anytime held on Wednesdays for 15 weeks (call for times). Classes
are $60 for members and $65 for non-members.

4. Basket Weaving
Basket weaving is the art of weaving pliable material to make a basket. This hobby is
one of the most widely spread crafts in history! You can use a variety of materials to
make baskets including vines, straw, animal hair, hide, grass, thread, and stems. Join
WAG’s Basket Weaving classes, also on Wednesdays, (July 8-August 12) from
1-3pm . Classes are $60 for members and $65 for non-members. Join this class and
save yourself a trip to TJMaxx!

5. Yoga
Struggling to touch your toes? Check out WAG’s Yoga classes held on Thursdays,
5:30-6:30 pm ! Yoga is a 5,000-year-old discipline from India. It was developed as a
practice to unite the mind and body. Need to lose a few quarantine pounds? Look no
